Common Merganser, grooming

Was lucky to catch a raft hanging around for a couple of days. So, set up early as low as I could while still staying dry and waited for this little gal. She was a delight to photograph.

K50, Sigma150-500 at 400mm, 1/1000 sec, f/9.0, ISO 1250, cropped closely.

More zoo pics. Not as nice a day. 25 degrees colder and overcast.

Some are less than 300mm...

Gorgeous duck and a neat setup!

With all of your gear at your disposal, any particular reason for choosing the K-50 + Sigma, or "just because"?

Nice. A cormorant as well. There must be some fish in the vicinity.

The mergansers collect along the shore for the land locked salmon spawn. It is neat to watch them try to get a whole fish down their gullet.

Yes, indeed! The K50 was my first digital Pentax and I've kept it for its light handling for work on the water. I keep the K50 and Sigma at the houseboat, seen in the photo, because that's where I do most of my boat work. I shoot a lot from a kayak and rowboat and figure if everything goes overboard, I'll cry but get over it quicker. My other equipment, not so much. I try to keep that stuff on land.

I really do prefer my beloved K3-II for the obvious reasons and have fought with my wallet over getting a second one to replace the 50. But I keep hearing rumors of an eventual K3 upgrade and figure, as long as the 50 is still working, might as well wait it out. Because, boy, would I love an articulating screen! The Sigma has been very versatile for wildlife, but more often than not, I'm disappointed in its sharpness, probably due to being spoiled by primes. I recently picked up a DA300 and have been shooting it with the 1.4 TC I already had. Time will tell if it was worth the investment, but I'm really enjoying the maneuverability, since I tend to shoot at the 400-450 range anyway.

I nearly duplicated your excursion... went to a local semi-frozen pond this afternoon, not expecting much but hoping for a duck or ten, and found a GBH. Usually don't find them in the winter by me.

A 400/5.6 + 1.4x-L

Along the Musconetcong River in Stanhope. Are you familiar with the area?

Some pictures from yesterday in good weather and light conditions. Taken with the DA* 300mm and the DA 1.4x teleconverter. I just love that combination.
