We get periodic overpopulation of the the Western Tent Caterpillar here. They like deciduous trees (although for some reason they never seem to cause much harm to the despised cottonwood trees). When they get really bad lots of trees are killed they get denuded so badly. And the 'raining' in the woods is like you described.

Way back in the late 1970's there was an explosion of the Western Tussock Moth. They like to dine on the conifers, so it was a big deal. At the peak, the clouds of the moths flyiing around street lights at night were so thick it blacked them out. Everywhere the ground was littered with the dead moths.

We have population explosions of tent caterpillars here in the northeast as well. Can remember years when out walking in the woods you were never out of sight of scores of their tents. BTW: During a walk with the dog a few days ago we passed through an area where essentially every tree had one to multiple gypsy moth egg cases adhering to the trunk. Probably not enough for a explosion this year, but I'd watch next year or the following

a new neighbor hunting voles in discarded concrete and mice in the shed
eventually it worked its way up to our stream
so I spooked the warblers getting a drink
the cat didn't spook

a beautiful cat but I wonder why is it ok to let a killing machine loose to wreak havoc on nearby wildlife

That cat looks to be feral.

Just for fun:
I spotted a pair of hawks checking out a nesting site about 1/4 mile away across the valley the other day and couldn't resist a shot with the F*600 & AF 1.7TC:

Cropped to 800px wide:

They didn't move in, though--couldn't get a mortgage, I guess (or, perhaps, didn't like the neighbor with the big lens ;~).

I tried to get close to these Wagtails using my FA*600mm on a tripod but the birds seemed to be scared by me carrying the lens and tripod towards them. So I had a go at using my K-5/Sigma 500mm F4.5 EX DG on a fotosnaiper stock that I have converted to work with Pentax.

And a young Rabbit.

Excellent as usual Gary - I like the tilted perspective of #3.
I usually use a monopod with my novoflex stock. Do you have a remote shutter release on your photosniper?

No I have wired a 2 stage switch to an old CS-205 cable on the original trigger

Why do you write ISO equivalent? Equivalent to what?
