Ok, I have a question--especially for those of you with lenses with "drop-in" filters but also front filter users
Hey Dave - I believe you lost your filter holder for your 300? were you able to find a replacement?

I just went through today's posts - wow what a lot of great shots from everyone really a pleasure, Sterby those BIF were really notable. I got some fox shots today that I am pretty eager to get processed.

And this is where you are wrong, the K-3 AF system is very capable and precise with the right lens.
I had similar problems and then I decided to take the hassle of adjusting.
I used a nearby lamp post as target and it didn't take 5 minutes to finish and it made a big difference in my images.
Now I get mostly sharp subjects at 500mm that are 300m or more away, depending on the surrounding obstacles.
I downloaded and used this to adjust my lenses

Totally mindblowing shots. Could you tell us more about how and where you took them?

After the adjusting the 50-500, I though about checking my other lenses as well. For the Tamron 70-200 I used piece of broken brick that I placed on a metal mesh table in the backyard. Focusing on the brick face, the shallow angle of the metal mesh showed very well the plane of focus. I stood at around 10-15m away. Earlier on the 50-500 the lamp post was around 100m away on a planked fence, again showing a clean scale for the plane of focus.
I had a similar focusing chart printed out but I thought adjusting focus in closer distance might not give a linear reliability at long distance, so I looked for bigger "scales" that I didn't have to print and assemble.

I just bought a focus chart on evilBay ($1.69 direct from China, expected delivery sometime in July or August...)

I just wonder how much use it will be for the lil'Bigma...

Thank you for the comment - It was rather interesting how I happened on these foxes, I was outside a home in the small town of Pincher Creek, Alberta, a couple of days ago and a fellow came out of his home and he had a ring flash on his camera. I commented that it appeared he was doing some macro shooting and the conversation went from there. I happened to have my camera with my Sig 500 sitting on the seat of my vehicle - that is where it pretty much lives - when we starting talking about wildlife photography he told me I really needed to check out the fox den that was just a short walk from his home. Well I pretty much ran over and was able to find the kits and I got a few shots. I returned yesterday, we had a bit of haze which made for much better lighting. I set up about 75 feet from the closest den entrance and watched the kits as they played around. I did not expect that Mom would come anywhere near while I was there but suddenly one of the kits started running up the hill behind the den and as I looked up, there was Mom and if looks could kill... I had no hide so I just kept my face behind the camera and after a while she hesitantly made her way down towards the den. I have never kept so still and as she met her brood I was able to get a lot of shots. I was very pleased with the one I got of her leaping in the air. She had left the den area and went back up the hill to sit and watch me from about 300 feet. As she sat her attention turned towards some thing moving in the grass and she began to stalk. I thought she would probably leap as I have watched them hunt before so I focused on a spot about ten feet in front of her and - well every now and then things work out. It was simply amazing to watch the interaction between Mom and the kits the love and adoration was palpable. What an great day I'm still just in awe.

Here is one of Mom when the first kit greeted her - she was not thrilled to find me there...

Nope, fortunately, the lack of that filter doesn't seem to make a big difference in IQ so I've just covered the slot with...yep, you guessed it...duct tape . The lens deserves better though so if any one has a lead on where I might find a filter holder for a FA*300/2.8, I'd sure appreciate hearing about it!

I'm envious of that fox series--real nice!

Someone different off in the bushes.

A K-1 image.
