Comment and Pelagic Cormorants

Aslyfox,

You are correct there. Hell I'd pontificate on this topic, or any other, all evening if the refreshments were in good order. The running fun fact in industrial technical circles is that the definition of "expert" is that you are either over 50 miles from your home office, or on an expense account.

JB
In my field (IT) we sometimes use the definition Ex = "has been", Spurt = "Drip under pressure". I often fit that definition, unfortunately.

Back to the topic: a Bird In Flight Shot with the M 400/5.6 on my K-3 of a pair of Pelagic Cormorants off Orlebar Point, Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada. I had to look the bird up. It was certainly new to me.

Kevriano and Canadien_Rockies,

Just an observation...

I am a recently retired industrial chemist. I have degrees in Chemistry and Biology. I have graduate work in Vertebrate Physiology, but in my training I only had one course in Entomology so I won't endeavor to address this taxonomy issue. I am making an over-arching scientific statement.

When observing biological systems over the years (I was in school the decade following Watson & Crick elucidating the DNA molecule structure via x-ray diffraction) it is a stepwise march which drags nomenclature with it kicking and screaming. First there are "some factions", then either they predominate, or fizzle away. Then nomenclature/taxonomical classifications are either adopted at the world authority level, or sparred over at some lower group level. This is true in chemistry also. The IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) nomenclature in organic chemistry changes periodically and the older scientists, or ones not current, jabber along in antiquated lingo. However, both are "correct" based on the system referenced or known to them.

It is more important that you both care enough to have the knowledge at hand. It would be a good topic to discuss over a beer while trying to round up an "expert" to pontificate.
Indeed. Maybe someone should print a Skipper book. It would only be about 20 pages though....

a juvenile Yellow Crowned Night Heron Nyctanassa violacea - Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Identification, All About Birds - Cornell Lab of Ornithology visiting the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center.

I learned while trying to id the bird from the Zoo staff that there is an active nest near the zoo on private land [ the owners had contacted them to have them removed b/c of worries about dropping on vehicle - the Zoo informed them that with the exception of 4 species it is against either Federal or State law to interfere with birds in Kansas - yeah Kansas ]

Focal Length 450.0mm (35mm equivalent: 675mm)
Exposure Time 1/500s (0.0020)
Aperture F/11.0
ISO Equivalent 2500

The Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Too late for the Passenger Pigeon, it became extinct by 1914...

QuoteQuote:
Migratory birds may seek respite within trees or on buildings considered private property. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 prohibits the removal of all listed species or their parts (feathers, eggs, nests, etc.) from such property. However, in extreme circumstances, a federal permit might be obtained for the relocation of listed species (in some states a state permit is required in addition to a federal permit). Pursuant to the spirit of the treaty, it is not trivial to obtain a permit; the applicant must meet a certain criteria as outlined in Title 50, Code of Federal Regulations, 21.27, Special Purpose Permits.
There are some 800 species covered by the act, 170 are considered "game birds", though less than 60 are actually hunted. Herons are not considered a "game bird"...

QuoteQuote:
The migratory bird conventions with Canada and Mexico define "game birds" as those species belonging to the following families:

Anatidae (swans, geese, and ducks)
Rallidae (rails, gallinules, and coots)
Gruidae (cranes)
Charadriidae (plovers and lapwings)
Haematopodidae (oystercatchers)
Recurvirostridae (stilts and avocets)
Scolopacidae (sandpipers, phalaropes, and allies)
Columbidae (pigeons and doves).

Something different...

Photo of the big screen when Denis Shapovalov greets the fans after signing at the camera... hence the weird effect on this picture.
