I was looking for shorebirds but was interrupted by the Snowbirds - Canada's aerobatic team.

This osprey was way, way out there. Taken with the FF equivalent of 800mm, then cropped. I'd rank the IQ as just barely acceptable.

Due to all of the smoke from fires in the Pacific Northwest there has been some really red sunsets. All photos are SOOC.

Today was the last day of my vacation and here at least it was absolutely gorgeous. I decided I felt good enough to take the Bigma out for a shoot since it has been about a year since I done any real wildlife. So I went to my favorite spot about 30 miles away. Of course I left my gimbal head at home . One thing I did figure out was I am sure out of practice.

I noticed this right away and just as I got the tripod setup he flew away . I managed to get a few test shots with high ISO.

I noticed these two and had to shoot through the branches. The lighting was terrible.

I was able to photograph this one from the foot bridge.

I saw this Egret while walking out and he was still then when I was heading back to the car. Waaaaaaaaaaaay beyond the limits of the Bigma even on the K3. This pretty much a %100 crop.

I really need to do this more often. It has been quite awhile since I have had this much fun with my camera gear. Someday I am going to get that 150-450.

You don't need the lowest ISO in bird photography, ISO 800 - 3200 is perfectly fine as it helps keeping your shutterspeed above 1/1000.
In your "high ISO test shot" with the great blue heron I can clearly see the feather details, as well with the others, bad lighting or not. Newer sensor technology gives us ISO invariance which helps the most keeping noise in control, even a little graininess is not a problem.
Keep up the good work, keep your shutter speed up and don't be afraid of higher ISO.

About that 150-450, it only adds weather sealing, sharpness and image quality is marginal improvement at best. Plus the Sigma HSM is more reliable than Pentax SDM and DC drive.

admittedly I am no expert

I only know what I like and I like my DFA 150 - 450

does it have faults, so some say

is it big and heavy - that I can cofirm

I, like others, seem to be able to use it hand held, others say only on a tripod

my suggestion, check out what it can do, look at the thread dedicated to it here on the forum

rent one and try it out.

I did, using LensRental.com

then I went looking for a bargain

I found one getting a like new " experienced " model

good luck

here is a juvenile yellow crowned night heron hunting - slight crop and pp isolating the bird

I set the K3 for Auto ISO 100-3200. I have a User Setting just for birding. The darn heron flew off right after I set my tripod up. I managed 4 test shots for exposure and that was it. I tried to salvage what I had. The problem with the 50-500 is that the 500 end is not the best. Up to about 400-425 it is really good. I normally keep my shutter speed above 1/1000s.
