Thank you Dennis, Albert - I thought he struck a rather jaunty pose for me

Bedraggled Birds in the Back Yard

It has been a miserable wet day here. We had some visitors that were damper (and not so pretty) as usual. I stressed out the K-3+DA55-300 (non WR) through a double paned glass door hand held and got these results. Not so shabby. ISO was high at 3200, aperture was maximum at 5.8, shutter speeds on the low range. EXIF on the images.

Song Sparrow 10 m/33 ft
Stellers Jay. 10 m/33 ft
Nuthatch. 20 m/66 ft
Stellers Jay. 15 m/50 ft

Osprey

Evening. We have been extremely fortunate to have a juvenile Male Osprey take up residence for 3 weeks at a pond not too far away from home, and so we spent a day photographing him last weekend, with varying amounts of success. The AF on the K3 II really didn't do well with shots of it diving and catching, therefore I don't have any. I did, however, get some respectable flight shots. Taken using a variation of single centre point focus and AFC, and 9 point multi focus. All of these are around a 50% crop too. They aren't really fast birds, that definitely helped. I'd appreciate any feedback. I'm ditching this lens and camera soon, I need more reach, so I need to swap brands to accommodate. Just for the Telephoto stuff though.

one of ours pulled off a dramatic assassination yesterday afternoon
while I was getting a shot of a yellow-rump this guy stooped on a group of robins
a geyser of birds but one straight lined it north
somewhere behind the cherry tree came an explosion of feathers and a squawk

no more birds for almost three hours

Those of you that have the DA* 300 and a K-1, have any of you tried that combination with the F1.7x teleconverter? If so, how were the results? Thanks, Steve.

Royal Spoonbill.
K-3 II, 150-450 handheld. See exif for shot details.
These birds are problematic subjects, very easy to blow the whites. Their feathers are brilliant white.
The only success I have had with them is to use spot metering.

Cheers,
Terry

Aye the egrets are the same. I just routinely drop the exposure at least a stop, bring back up in PP as necessary. Softer light with a bit of cloud can help.
Your pic looks a bit under on my monitor Terry.
