Very nice series Dave
Thanks--it was fun as you can imagine.
Also we had a surprise visitor--it's a .71MP crop but always a thrill to see here in the city!

Didn't know there are parakeets in the UK or were these taken on a trip?

London is overrun with them and they are now classed as a pest.

parakeets escaped from the branch of Ealing Studios used for the filming of The African Queen — Isleworth Studios — in 1951. parakeets escaped from damaged aviaries during the Great Storm of 1987. a pair were released by Jimi Hendrix in Carnaby Street, London, in the 1960s

Lovely shots Gaz. They are a nuisance too. My father in law gets them in his garden. They decimate the peanut feeders!
BTW, do you own every desirable long lens!

Great pics once again Gary.

Been a bit quiet at the RSPB lately, though migrating birds have been passing through - 3 goosanders the other day. And there hasn't been much sun either. Yesterday was sunny however, and one of the cormorants obliged with poses that perfectly caught the low autumnal sun. Now if only I could get a bit closer so as to fill 3/4 of the frame instead of 1/4... where's the guy with the portaboat...
Adaptall 300mm f2.8 + sigma apo 1.4x tc, K5, bean bag. I am becoming more enamoured of this combo, visual focus seems really "on" (with tenpa 1.36x VF magnifier) , when I check with live view there is usually no discrepancy. F4 ((with tc) makes a big difference over f5.6 and slower, and even the barely half a stop over the FD 400mm's f4.5 is making a difference I think, though its hard to tell given the very different characteristics of the EVF on the samsung NX20.
These were the 3 best shots IMO. I used the brush in LR3 a bit to bring up the body of the bird. I'm exclusively shooting in M with a PKM mount with this combo due to the mechanical aperture issues I mentioned previously - a PKA mount won't engage into AE. It's a bit weird because the sigma tc makes the camera think its in Av - F numbers display. I have to ignore those, but make sure a high enough f number is displayed, otherwise the K5 won't stop the lens all the way down to what I have set on the ring (somewhere between f5.6 and f8 for these).
ISO 400 (#1, 2), 800 (#3).

With a passing pochard.

Ahh yes, the ultimate. Not seen one for sale for some time. There was one not far from me last year, at a not unreasonable 5k... I've been offered a 250-600 for the same figure.

PP challenge

Here's a DNG file of the cormorant. If any of you folks are keen, I would be interested in seeing what difference later versions of LR/different programs/different eyes and methods might have on the result. 27MB file.
