The first shot was using spot exposure which probably picked up on light breast feathers, whereas the second was shot with +1 EV, which might explain the difference.
I think I was lucky with 1/640 for the second shot, I'd normally want more than that for BIF.

I reckon I'm very lucky, with the resident Little Eagles (and other raptors) only a few km away, and they often fly in quite close to have a look...maybe they know me after all the times I've been out there trying to get shots of them
