My bird was back this morning, this time the blinds were up. Cropped, shot from about 20' away through double glass.
Still not happy with the results, hope he comes back for more chances to get it right, or at least better.
Also a wren eating a dried mealworm, and a downy woodpecker.
I think that's a pretty good result for shooting thru double glass. I can see feather detail.

I rarely ever see the female downy woodpeckers.

A Carolina wren?? They sometimes hang around MessyChewBits in winter, but the deep cold over the past weeks and recent snow will probably do them in this year.

What a neat looking bird - the marking on the feathers makes me think of the Ring-neck Pheasant's markings.

Anyway, great photos!!

Yes, we have them year round.
This winter I popped for a 17 oz, $10 bag of dried mealworms, they've been gorging on them.
Heavy crop from a few years back with the DA-L ED 55-300:

The EXIF says the lens was a Samsung Xenon 50-200??

Tiny guys, never stop moving. DA*300 with TC, K5iis. Tiny image crops as well. I guess the only way to catch them closer is to start feeding them.

Pileated Woodpecker - looks a bit "flashy" but it was in natural light - a sunny spot in the cypress swamp.

Great Crested Flycatcher

Yes.... the image SOC is quite poor.... quite noisy etc. However, the capture (as you outline) is quite extrodinary in that the number of elements that are so sweet. I was given a camera jpeg that had already been tweeked a bit... they are sending me the ogifinal SOC jpeg.... so hopefully that may be a bit better.....it was shot with reasonable camera settings... but like most things shutter speed meant a noisey iso (older low end camera) .... I know if I had a raw I could probally get a good 16-24" canvas from the 4mp image with reasonable detail. The bird is quite hard to shoot generally (Peregrine Falcon) as it was one of a wild pair semi remote.

although I wonder how much of that striking image is due to the image captured SOC as opposed to good PP
I have no idea of what her in camera jpeg processing settings were...... I've just used lightroom and Piccure+ with limited effect because of the jpeg losses. What I do know, with a high degree of certainty, is that the potential of the image captured has been compromised..... really impacts when looking to print wall hanging stuff......

Very cool! Must be the year for them.
Ran across this one from 7 years ago, didn't think much about the light feathers at the time, thought it was just molt, even though it was mid January.

I don't know what the threshold is for determining leucism. Your cardinal on the previous page has a significant amount of paleness. I've seen male cardinals with white strands mixed in with the red... but it's quite a sight when the white patches are bright and well-defined.

Few bird shots

Here are a few backyard birder shots. All are with the K-3 and Pentax-M 400mm f 4.5, a nice lens for this purpose, I think. At 0 degrees F, they birds sure seemed to appreciate the sunflower seed, suet cake, and peanut butter/cornmeal mix!
