Cannot remember the distance precisely - took an awful lot of wildlife pictures during that tour - but I'm pretty sure the Bigna was out to 500mm (I'd have to look @ the EXIF and it's on a different computer) and the image is cropped somewhat. We were in a little tour bus (mini van size) so no danger. They do not allow tourists out of the vehicles anywhere near the animals. I don't think warthogs are especially dangerous, but lions & leopards (not cheetah), buffalo, baboons, rhino, elephants, prudent to remain in the vehicle.

It's a throw-away photo, I know.

But. This starling was about 40 yards away. I was leaning out the window, shooting handheld. Some atmospheric disturbance, as it was about 15F outside and 70F inside, I could see the air ripple as the heat escaped through the open window. Cropped away 75% of the frame, resized and sharpened for web, no other PP. The old Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 200-500mm F5.6 (31A) + Tamron Adaptall 140F 1.4X TC on my K-3 II. Perhaps I am easily impressed, but I'm impressed.

It was 2 years ago this month when I got my 300* lens, this was one of my first test shots with it using my K-S2.

nice thing about the St. Louis Zoo where I took this photo

is that there you don't pay to go in only for certain " extras "

Haven't been to the StL zoo in years, but with Mrs Bob now also retired we plan to go this year, through the week hoping for a smaller crowd.
Last November octuplet cheetah cubs were born.
edit to say this is not my photo.

So cute, as are almost all kittens (except to people who hate cats). However, I would not reach in to pet one.

Sigma 400mm multicoated test pics

QuoteOriginally posted by robtcorl Quote
I dug out a Sigma MF 400mm f5.6 that I bought about 5 years ago, mainly to use on the original Q with adapter.
I've actually just been putting together a review of that lens. I think it's better than indicated in the reviews but it does seem prone to fringing - see test crop below, PF against white shirt. I'm not too surprised the images with the Q don't look that great, 5x crop factor scrutiny just shows up any flaws. Very decently sharp however on apsc (test pics with an NX20, 20MPx mirrorless).

And of the tame robins, F5.6 top, f9 below, cropped and resized.

And a blackbird with my K5, f11.

I definitely get better results with my FD 400mm f4.5, or my tamron 300mm f2.8, +/- tc. But this lens has a good spec inc PKA mount and a convenience cachet, a compact enough 400mm to easily fit in the lens pockets of my camera bag.

A mother cheetah with her single surviving cub following at a respectful distance. They settled for a while watching nearby impala, then the female set out stalking and again her cub followed at non-interfering distance.

Last week during the cold spell here I had the same happen, first time for me, as I shot pictures from inside my bay window at the bird feeder. Strange looking bokeh and even stranger looking birds!

It was a couple days prior to my starling photo that I figured out what a huge problem that is. I had a few nice snaps of a titmouse singing its heart out, all mush due to air turbulence.

These were during a March snow last year, all with the 300*
March is usually one of our snowiest months and I like it then, it doesn't stick around long.
