A few K-1 images as well. I always start with the K-1, wait until the frustration builds then switch to the K-3. Slower frame rate and smaller buffer plus the K-3 and DA*200 with 1.4 TC are a fraction the weight of the 300 2.8 and 1.7.
When the weather is this cold trying to manually focus with your hand in a mitten is just really hard. The 1.7x really is more of a warm weather option.

K-1 and Tamron SP AF 300 2.8 ED [IF], with F 1.7x AF Adapter (510mm ƒ 4.5)

Wonderful shots. K1 is no slouch for wildlife. At least slow moving ones

If you get the images it's better. It's always a trade of, A shot at a better image with more chance of totally missing the shot, or a more sure file shot at an almost as good image.

The K-1 images are taken on a tripod, right in front of a spot I've put some seed down. The K3 images are hand held, taken of birds in nearly trees and bushes. I really like both types of image, and you that to give up either.

At a feeding station.... with the K-1

Stalking birds hanging out neatby with the K-3, hand held.

They are suited to different types of images. It's almost like studio portraiture as opposed to candid images.

thanks

the SR in the K 5 II really helped

if you know what I mean

[ knees a knocking - https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/someone's%20knees%20are%20knocking ]

the elephant was really close and it was a mixed group or cows, adolescents and infants getting as close as 15 - 20 feet

when one looked at us and put its ears out wide, our guide said " time to go "

I am always a little nervous when I am close to animals and their young

The animal that scares me the most is a female moose with calf. They can do something like 40 mph and have no concept of "he's running away; he's no problem."

MZ-S, M 400/5.6 probably f/8 @ 1/125 (dark cloudy weather) on Manfrotto 055B with 0168 ball head. Film was probably FujiColor 400. They are across a deep ditch, about 50 feet away from me, and she's still giving me the eye!

THye do however have a concept of "I'm gonna knock this sonofabitch over and stamp him into the dirt."

Well said. Very, very, true.

Bull moose are just as bad in their own way. The Pacific Great Eastern Railway from North Vancouver to Prince George used to be derailed during the rut. I guess their little switching locomotives sounded like competitors. Nothing like 40 mph 2000 pound moose hitting the loco head on to give the engineers a thrill.

Bird and snow shots.

Photos taken with Pentax K-3 and adapted Pentax-DA* 645 300mm f 4.0. Effective field of view of the 645 lens on the K-3, per my calculations, is around 720mm.

720 645mm. It's still the same as a 300 ƒ4 on a K-3, so only 300 APS-c mm.

or 450mm full-frame equivalent (i.e., it has the same FOV on APS-C as a 450mm lens has on a FF DSLR such as a K1).
