The two rear Canada Geese on the left seem to have figured out that there's something odd going on here - the bird with the black breast is a Barnacle Goose. The nearest area they would call home is in Greenland, they occasionally show up on the east coast of Canada and the USA, but they are pretty rare this far inland. There's a debate as to whether it escaped from somebody's exotic waterfowl collection, but it has no leg bands or other markings. The bird was about 200m away, so some cropping involved here! There were fast moving dark clouds and snow squalls, so fortunate to have hit a patch of reasonable light.

Nice catch!
Some are being observed in the last few weeks around here in southern Quebec, so it is probable that it's just an exception that went a bit on a westward tangent...

Thanks Weevil - I could have used your 250-600mm lens on this occasion.

There have been three nor'easters that have blown up the east coast of North America in the past few weeks. Could have been blown in on one of those. Maybe another one due on the first day of spring too.

Haaaaaalp! Identifying Aussie Raptors.

I went down to the park early this morning to hopefully get some under-wing shots of what I had thought to be a family of three Kites.

The following are all taken with a DA-300 on my K3 but are unfortunately back-lit so I've had to play with them to bring out the detail also they are heavily cropped as they barely filled the circle in the viewfinder.

They were all taken at the same location (Braeside Park Wetlands) within a two hour period. So many doing the same thing in the same spot!

1/ Whistling Kite. Pretty sure.

I'd love to have that combo. I used to think it was too easy, but my Tamron 300 2.8 is six pounds, the A* is 6 kg. It's in a whole different league of weight. I still can shoot my Tamron 300 3.8 with TC hand held for about 5 minutes before I get tired.

I'd have a question concerning your Sigma 300mm f2.8. Does this lens work as combo with 1.4x Pentax TC or 1.7x TC/AF adapter?
(By the way - do you still use it (or at least from time to time)?)

Some of my favorite shots have come from days when I didn’t expect to get anything... sometimes it’s just having the camera in the car and pulling off the road to capture a particular moment.

It’s the spontaneity in it all that fuels my love for photography. Especially true for wildlife photography
