I think this is correct, if anyone knows any different please let me know.
On my A*400, the filter does affect focus but if I remove the filter I can simply refocus and get a sharp image. I tested this with about 20 shots each, with my K-3II and my 1st D, and with my lens I can use or not use the filter ( I do put the holder back in either way) Normally I leave the original Pentax UV filter installed to help keep dust out of the lens....

The user manual mentions the filter holder (p. 3) (49mm thread) but doesn't mention any mandatory filter or any filter included with the original lens. It does mention that the protective filter that can be screwed onto the front of the lens to protect the front element (p. 9), although it doesn't explicitly state that it was included in the original kit (150mm diameter for the 1200mm).

The user manual covers the all four of the A* super telephoto lenses (300mm f/2.8, 400mm f/2.8, 600mm f/5.6, 1200mm f/8). I have the 600mm. By the way, I have an original manual, so if anyone wants a PDF of the manual, I can scan it to make a more legible copy than is available on the web (a scan of a barely legible photocopy) and e-mail it to them. I'm not sure if there is a place on these forums where such manuals are made available.

It's kind of mysterious to me. Way back in this thread there's a discussion (primarily me & imtheguy) about the drop-in filter for the A*400/2.8. As I recall, the conclusion was that it was very important for that lens. OTOH, I lost the filter (& holder) for my FA*300/2.8 and it doesn't seem to have had any impact on IQ whatsoever. I have the opening covered with gaffer's tape. ( again)

Thanks! Had a couple of overcast but pleasant days; now today & tonight under a "winter" storm warning again! Snow expected. I guess no Spring here, this year.

Zzeitg; I've never seen such awesome photos of birds! Sure makes me envious of that 560! You really bring the best out of that lens!

The great crested grebes didn't breed last year, but they're looking busy now..

These last two with my tamron 300mm f2.8 60B + newly acquired sigma 1.4 x tc, non "apo" this time, Samsung NX20. Some comparison pics indicate it is pretty much as sharp as the apo one but not as well corrected - more fringing and haloes etc creeping in specifically at open apertures.

This was a quick stacked tc's experiment - the sigma + adaptall 014F (=588mm focal length), f5.6 on the lens, 400ASA:

Old saying (more-or-less as I remember it): The lowliest of birds is poetry in flight.
