Went again to Pulicat Lake (near Chennai, India) to see some birds in plumage. Here are some,
All with FA*300/4.5 and K-5iis. Lot of cropping.

Curlew Sandpiper

Black-tailed Godwit

Lesser sandplover

Nice bird shots. I always wished I could rent one of those old Mahendra jeeps and hire an Indian bird expert to take me on a tour of the most famous Indian bird sanctuaries. For our fellow forum members who may be unfamiliar with India, I post this link that provides lots of information about the sanctuaries, although it omits Pondicherry.

Please keep posting so I may be with you vicariously!

It will be my pleasure to post pics.
As to the Mahindra (not e, but i ) jeeps, that is my dream too. For the price of a 560mm, I can get an old Mahindra jeep. So, you can understand my confusion
That is a good site. But most places you can't take Mahindra jeeps In Bharatpur, you have to take a 'rickshaw'. In Ranganthittu/Chilika/... you have to take a row boat.
If in case you (or any one else) visit India for birds, do give a shout out. We (India Pentax users) are converting a few Canonians/Nikonians to Pentax. The 560mm is a great attraction for birders, who still can't afford a big 600/4 yet

Thanks for this information. It is a real pleasure to be in communication with you. I used to spend lots of time in India during the 1980s conducting international business/export related seminars and carrying out other consultancies as well. This was back in the time when one saw mainly Padminis, Ambassadors, the Tata Estate Wagon, and occasionally a Mahindra jeep. There were Bedford trucks, of course, and Mahindra had just started up production. If not for the infirmities of age, I would love to tour your beautiful country one more time with an emphasis upon birds! You may be sure I will follow your postings with interest.

I was taking some test pics with a newly acquired tc - a sigma 1.4x, non-apo - and there were two cormorants on the musselmans raft. So I used them as a subject, and then, just out of interest I tried stacking the sigma with an adaptall 014F tc on my 300mm f2.8 60B.
Samsung NX20, sigma 1.4x top 2 - 1/200sec; 014F + sigma bottom 2 - 1/160sec. Same PP. 1st pics show whole frame.

Mmm .. not much difference in the end result. But, I think, a viable 588mm f5.6'ish combo. One more:

The "apo" tc might be better...

this is one of the Eurasian Eagle Owls at the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center in the tree inside of its enclosure

it likes to hang out up high

making it very difficult to get a good photo

through the netting, through the branches, through the needles and this is what you are left with

and I am very glad I'm on one side of the net and they are on the other
