OK, a Red Headed Woodpecker showed up this morning. That did it! They're reasonably plentiful in other parts of Maryland but rare here in the city--I'll see one here every 2 or 3 years. Shoulder be damned, I went and got the tripod and set it up with Sigma 500/4.5 and the AF1.7x. Luckily, no damage to my shoulder--or gear. Still, the tree he chose is twice as far as the one I lost over the winter so I had to crop heavily--to about 2.5MP. I've since swapped out the Sigma with the F*600/4. The bird is gone but I'm ready. Can I say I miss my old tree--big time?

Of course you can! Nice shot of the bird from that kind of distance!

Capturing a bird that will often come within a metre or so, that's doing it the hard way! Good shots Rod.

A special photo in every way. Well done Dave.

Look forward to captures with the 6.8kg beast.

Is that like mine, the Tamron SP AF 300 2.8 LD [IF] ?
It's an earlier, Adptall-2 lens. I have an A adapter. Comes with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters.

Went to see Lesser Noddy that came ashore. This is a pelagic (deep sea) bird. But when it came ashore, there was a birder invasion to the Pulicat lake.

Some wonderful bird images posted above. Here's a little (chipping sparrow) song sparrow (my error) singing for all it is worth, but making only tiny little sounds. Nikon 600mm f5.6 on an Oly 10 mkII. BTW: I set the aperture @ f8, which gives a slight boost to IQ, then use the lens essentially as I would a no-aperture mirror optic. Stopping to f11 gains no IQ and only an imperceptible increase in DOF, neither one worth the loss of a shutter speed.
