Found this beside a VFD parking lot while documenting a rural mountainous 36+/- hour day/night 208 mile team running relay race. Mom was feigning injury trying to distract runners and traffic. VFD put larger stones around the gravel and sticks to protect the area. K-3, A/400

Portrait of Coombe Wood

An unusual subject for a long lens, but a fine example of the colour, dynamic range and low noise of the K-S2. Tokina 400mm SD AT-X, handheld.

Ducklings

A few from this morning. These ducklings and their mom were very cooperative. They didn't run away when I approached.

For various reasons some of my scientific research associates were for a time interest in the "cute" factor of very young animals. It may indicate or be associated with prolonged parental care.

First impressions of K3-ii

Da Daaaa. I wouldn't call it a beater, but it is quite worn - presumably it was carried around a lot. The shutter count however is just a reasonable 16,000 + (that doesn't reset at 100,000 does it?). I wouldn't be too bothered about the on/off switch glitch except for one thing: the settings usually go back to defaults so every time I switch on I have to go in and reset to dng, RAW etc. The sooner I get it fixed the better.

And my first bird pic with the 60B+014F. Just a coot.

There wasn't much around at the rspb so I went to see if the stonehatches were still amongst the brambles and gorse. They certainly were, along with a gang of linnets and a green finch or two. I ended up taking more shots of the linnets. It occurs to me the one persistent female stonechat might be a juvenile, recently fledged - it looks a bit small, plumage not quite there. cf my post with the K5 - #28573.

My first impressions are very favourable. The focus confirm seems more positive on the K3-ii, live view screen is better, though I couldn't figure out how to magnify LV. But back at the PC quite a lot of the shots were OOF - more than I wanted/expected. The shots where there was some f/g or b/g to tell indicated front focussing. So I returned again with the big tripod. Some persistent flicking into/out of LV did not really show up any great bias to front or back focus (maybe slight FF), I think mainly I just need to practice and familiarise. The UM said to press OK and spin the speed dial to magnify LV, but this seemed to just cycle through some different info show screens with just one magnified view, approx 2x. Am I missing something (this is in M mode, MF)?

I think I can see a clear advantage over the K5 in results.

When it gets to 105 degrees, the normally skittish painted bunting pose well for a mist bath in the flower bed.

A rare one for y'all! Yellow-billed Cuckoo at Fermilab. They prefer to nest in secluded areas, so...they're in steep decline. Carrying two cameras in the field is paying off.

Two 'new to me' birds at Braeside.

Eastern Spinebill.

Striated Pardalote.

Now I 'just' have to get better shots of both.
