I guess Canberra (or at least most of it) has the wrong soil for the Spotted, they need something they can dig into. And the Striated needs dead trees with small hollows.

Good news for me, the Frogmouths returned to the same tree this morning.

Why is that good news? Well I'm meeting someone there tomorrow and now have a chance of showing them the Frogmouths.

50-500mm SIgma, which when first introduced was surely a benchmark setting lens.

Speaking of Pardalotes, uncropped or cropped?

I prefer the cropped. The branch behind the bird is a little distracting and takes the eyes away from the subject a bit in my opinion.

For those of you that have used both the DA 300 with DA 1.4tc and the 150-450, what are your thoughts?

I've been debating trading towards the zoom, but I'm hesitant because I really like the size of the DA 300 and the option of shooting at f/4 comes in handy at times. The AF is a little slow, but I've managed to make it work for me, even with the teleconverter. I haven't seen any comparisons that showed me a "real world" image quality improvement with the zoom, so the question is... Am I missing anything?

Cropped looks best.

You also have my greatest respect for managing to get so many great shots of these tiny, active little birds. Takes great patience and camera craft.

Thanks, it's a combination of letting the birds get used to you and the fact that now they're nesting the have to get on with what they're doing.

As an example, this shot took about 20 minutes of leaning against a dead tree waiting.
I knew wrens were around but it took that long before they came back.

Superb Fairy-wren (F):

Many of the small birds in this park are skittish, probably because of the number of raptors around.
The tree I was leaning against sometimes has a Black-shouldered Kite or Nankeen Kestral sitting at the top.
