I believe this is a Common Tern but not entirely sure - captured in Newcastle NSW (winter) - so non-breeding.

I love this A*300mm f2.8 and 1.4X L combo on the K3ii - stellar setup

Have you ever tried the F 1.7x AF Adapter on it? I use it on my Tamron 300 2.8 all the time and it performs very well. That would get you to 510mm ƒ4.5 with limited AF for a fraction the price of a 500mm ƒ4.5 lens.

My "go to" spot for shorebirds at this time of year was pretty dried up today. A Solitary Sandpiper took flight before I could even get close. On the other hand, nice to see one of our "feeder birds" (American Goldfinch) foraging for itself for a change!

Not sure what happened - I posted about the plane photos but "it's gone".

Anyway, neat series Gary - that's some interesting mods to the U-2 and the B-1's are just great looking!!

Once upon a time those sort of shots would get you shot, or at least shot at.

Nice.

I didn't think to use the 1.7x adapter mainly because I have been dissatisfied with it (never seems to do well on combo's).

Well, a very quick test in dim light has me curious to test some more. I have combined the A*300/2.8 with 1.4XL and 1.7XF tc's. Image quality was surprisingly good. Also, light transmittance was good enough to allow for AF to function (perhaps this is related to the quality of the A*300mm lens (perhaps the T-stop of the A*300 is better than the average bear).

If the above combo works in broad daylight and the IQ is better than cropping then I have a semi-AF 714mm f5.6? - if so - AWESOME

The 1.7X TC works really well on the A*300/2.8. Not sure about adding a 1.4X TC though.

Great shots. The TC does appear to pair nicely with that lens.

So I see. Very nice. I have been quite disappointed in the F1.7X tc. But, perhaps, that toy was made specifically for the long A* lenses not necessarily for the other focal lengths. This logic would make sense as the F series had no 'fast' 200mm, 300mm or 400mm options whereas the A series did.

A couple of years ago I sold my Sigma 50-500mm OS as I splashed out on the 150-450mm WR but as much as I love the Pentax lens I missed the close focus ability of the Sigma. Anyway, managed to find a minter the other day for a reasonable price (they seem to have shot up in value lately) so jumped at it ....

Nice shot! Short minimum focusing distance is definitely a perk of the 50-500. We sometimes forget how much this adds to the versatility of a lens.
