Looks like a prototype for Jabba the Hutt!

Here's a female Common Merganser (I prefer the Brit name - "Goosander")

The top half of the bird's beak seemed to be broken. I wonder if it will survive.

I’m usually not fond of squirrel shots, but I’ll make an exception for these. Nicely captured!
Thank you both, guys!

Hi ZZeitg

Is he happy or warning you ?

Dave
Considering the sound he/she made (yapping at me), I would say it was combination of being surprised, curious and a little scared.

An exceptionally non-squirrel shot (DFA 150-450) below

You're right - but it does seem pretty healthy otherwise.

FYI: The exact number of living bird species isn't know precisely - there may be unrecognized species; there may be two named species that are actually just color variants; there are certainly some very rare species that have gone extinct since they were last seen and counted - but, most agree there are about 10,000 species*. Tricky to know how to identify every one of them.

*One source attempted a precise count and came up with 10,404, with the addendum: it is probable that 101 of those on the list are now extinct.
