I invested two hours yesterday evening photographing great egrets with a Tokina 500mm f/8 mirror lens on my tripod-mounted K-S2. Only a few great egrets were at the wetland in Midland County, Michigan when I arrived. When I left, at least 50 were roosted there. These three images were captured at ISO 3200.

Rubinar 500mm f8 mirror

Also in mirror club..

Godwits, snipe and wagtails provided the opportunity to test drive a recently acquired Rubinar 500mm f8 mirror.

I habitually use my NX20 with mirrors, the facility to magnify the viewing image 5x or 7x in the evf is my best opprtunity to get the focus. F8 (actually T10'ish) by eye through an OVF proves to be just too hit and miss with the emphasis on miss - at least for me. These were taken using a bean bag. The godwit pics were at waters edge and backlit by the reflection off the water - mirrors just don't like any sort of unfavourable light like that IME - and didn't turn out very well. It was actually the images of the frustratingly skittish wagtails that came out best, due to being closest. Mirror lenses just aren't as sharp as refractive lenses so being able to resize more makes the difference. All big crops in any case.

Pretty good, not dissimilar to my tamrons, I shall try to make more of a comparison.

From the Dixon Bioblitz a couple weekends ago. One day of photos processed and posted.
The indigo bunting is stunning. I see them occasionally nearby, but always far up on the high power lines, singing. Would never show in a picture as more than a silhouette speck.

I have yet to nail a really good photo of a male.

Best I have of a female.

Males always way off in the tops of trees

Or on the ground in bad light.

Or directly overhead in bad light.

Or in bad light.

Or just directly overhead.

Sort of Terry. It’s the abandoned rail bed of the old Ann Arbor railroad headed toward the former yard in Elberta. Ferries transported these freight cars across Lake Michigan.

This was purely a test shot this morning on my K-1.

Pentax 150-450mm and Pentax 1.7x Adapter ... 40% crop, 765mm hand held, shot wide open (f/8) in very gloomy conditions. I think with a bit of fine tuning and a tripod it could be a useable combination.

The 1.7X adapter I have found it to work exceptionally well with long lenses when you have the time to set the combo on a good tripod and MF through LV. I will post some test shots as well when I have the time.
