(K-1 is unluckily not the right camera for this kind of shots)

That is the main weakness of Pentax for wildlife. A K3 iii with D500 AF would be perfect.
Nice Caracara shots, but it's not all doom and gloom for Pentax. Posting #29746 above (flight shot of immature Cooper's Hawk) was taken with the K-3 and DA* 300mm, and was cropped to about 15% of the frame, also an impulsive shot just after the bird had taken off. This one was another major crop, with the K-3, DA*300mm and 1.4x TC. It was taken during a 5-mile hike where weight and compactness was an issue. I may not get what I want every time, but my Pentax setup isn't a disaster by any means.

I'm looking forward to a successor, but I won't be trading my K-3 in any time soon.

I should be so unlucky with my K1. That is a great capture

The little birds in flight are tough for sure.

Those are valid points and I’ve used the exact combo that you’re describing. Each combo has its advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes we just have to make the most of the gear that we have and enjoy ourselves.

4.4 (6.5 in crop mode) FPS compared to 8.3 (old good K-3) or even 10 (D500). You can't argue it away.

The K1 Mark 2 maintains those numbers when the AF button is held down in AFC. I find the K1 MII in crop mode better in practice than the K3 was.

Some recent birds with the K-3 + FA*300 f4.5.

Galah

A pair of Galahs checking out one of our Eucalyptus Ovatas as a possible nest site. (They decided it wasn't suitable.)

Crimson Rosella (this one has just about lost all the green plumage of its immature state)

Rainbow Lorikeet

Laughing Kookaburra

Golden Whistler (female)

Bassian Thrush

Australian White Ibis

And here's a Brown Thornbill that I got with the K-3 and DA-L 55-300
