I hadn’t done much bird watching until the last 4 years, so now I’m trying to observe those birds and I hope I’ll get some nice photos too. If you have any samples please show us some

Helmeted guinea fowl, out on a limb, somewhat unusual as they generally forage on the ground in groups. This one was making a racket, probably looking for a mate.

When I first glanced at the text I thought 700-800mm was the lens you used, and thought maybe your were imprudent not to use something longer.
K3, DA*300, 1.4 TC. so ± 630mm. Both too long and not long enough

Head on shots were from about 3 metres/yards. I probably could have stayed there while it went past (snakes are mostly dangerous when startled or threatened) but why take chances.

These are both excellent Mohammed, but the bee shot particularly stands out. Don't see 300mm+ plus lenses used for macro-type shots like this very often - the minimum focus distance makes it difficult
Thanks Des, I have only just got this lens and am experimenting , I don't do much wildlife or birds (it was bought for cricket) so I need alternatives for the winter months and it seems to work well at minimum focus of 1.4m

Decided to fix my SMC-K 400mm 5.6 lens I got for $25 bucks at the Flea Market.
Internal round baffle was loose in the barrel so I removed it , drilled new holes in it, and put it at the rear of the lens right in front of the mount.
Then a near complete disassembly and cleaning of the middle element that had mildew on it , and a good going over of both the front elements.
Rear mount was missing 4 of the 5 screws so borrowed a couple from a Rikenon P 28mm lens.....Perfect.
Threw my home made tripod mount from the 300mm Takumar on it and it fits.
First couple shots look good....to me anyway.
K-r and SOOC Jpgs.

I'm really liking this 645 A* 300/4 when the shot calls for it. I replaced a 67 300/4 with it and rendering is very similar but the 645 version is quite a bit smaller and lighter. It was a bit more than $25, lol!

Thanks, my plan was to include the rising nearly full moon among those peaks but the clouds prevented that. Maybe I can catch it tonight but the forecast isn't looking favorable.

Yes, significantly more than $25 but it also came with a matched 1.4x TC and I think it was a good value.

Well done! Rescuing vintage primo lenses is a good thing to do. Also props for being able to do it.

Wonderful shots of a wonderful bird.

I wish I have your skills to rescue lens like this. The images are great.
