Originally posted by WPRESTO We've had a few melanistic (black) squirrels around for several years now. The genetic trait has probably spread outward from the squirrels at reasonably nearby Mt. Holyoke College where black squirrels have been abundant for a very long time. I have the sense after trying to photograph one that for some reason, on the average, they are shyer and quicker to run for cover than the grey variety.
When I was living in Toronto, we had an obnoxious black squirrel who quite often inhabited our back yard. She was so aggressive my cats were afraid of her. When she had babies she had one black and one grey. Nether was ever as aggressive as she was. She once chewed a hole in the back screen door, got on the kitchen table and took the lid off the pickle jar our renter fed her peanuts from. We started closing the back door. She came around front and chewed the screen from the front window. I guess there are black squirrels and black squirrels. I once saw her attack one of my cats who had chased her up a ladder. She bopped the cat right on the top of the head.
