Great Shot!
Thank you. Sometimes I fish out older images and two questions arise: 1) why have my photo skills deteriorated?; and 2) why did I bother buying newer, more expensive equipment? Needless to say, I immediately dismiss the second question.

Sounds familiar.

Such a fascinating bird. For some reason it brings to mind the old Flash Gordon serial, originally made for theaters but it played on TV when I was a kid, in which he encounters "rock men" who materialize off the wall of a cave, and similarly are able to disappear by just leaning against the rocky wall, closing their eyes and blending completely with the geology. Frogmouths similarly just change into a broken tree branch by standing still and closing their eyes.

Common Nighthawk

This is the Canadian version of the frogmouth: the Nighthawk. It also blends into branches on which it rests. The nighthawk hunts at dusk and dawn, resting blended into cottonwood branches in Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta. It is a member of the Nightjar family and eats insects caught in flight.

I took this picture of a nighthawk at our campsite in the park in 2015 using the K10D and M 400/5.6. ISO 400, 1/250 @ ?? probably f/8.
