Not much today, but one nice find. A Grey Fantail nest! Tiny thing, not much bigger than an eggcup. Maybe 50mm (2"). Three chicks inside.

Tussacbird - very tame

Striated Caracara

Cobb's Wren - restricted to just a few remote islands

An amazing place to visit and overwhelming compared to my usual Toronto haunts at this time of year - but hard to crouch for those low eye-level shots after I cracked a rib halfway through.

Tokina SD 400mm on my K3

I took the tokina SD 400mm to the Spinnies, always a good bet for test pics of birds on the feeders. It was a cloudy morning, light was dim, and results weren't that inspiring, I deleted most of them. But at the other hide - a bonus. The water rail was scampering out of the reeds to pick up the droppings from the feeders. All f8 (ish).

Bit of motion blur on this one.

Couple of sample pics off the feeders.

This snipe was at Conwy RSPB, big crop.

It's certainly a pretty good lens, I think I get more out of my FD 400mm f4.5, and my adaptall 300mm f2.8 + tc. I'm thinking particularly of the detail from a big crop like the snipe pic (though looking at that snipe pic again you could argue it is slightly back focused).

It was a miserable day today. Cold, snowy and even freezing rain.
I went out nevertheless hoping to get more familiar with the F*600 f4 but this is the only bird shot I got that is worth posting.
Taken on a monopod..

What happened? (I've had a cracked rib - very painful and hard to breathe deeply.)

Did you have to ask? I'd like to be able to say I was rolled on by a massive Elephant Seal, but actually I slipped in the bathtub at the hotel! We had about 2 1/2 hours of off-road Land Rover riding the next day, which didn't help. Very painful at times but the painkillers seem to working.

I'm not laughing. I was carrying a portable fridge when a step broke under my foot. The fridge landed on top of me. Another time I got bruised ribs when I was trying to tip our pet wether to trim his hooves; I fell over and Oscar stood on my chest with his full 110kg weight. I wish I could say I was making a citizen's arrest of an armed robber or snatching a child from the path of a train, but there's no glory in these injuries!

Astonished to see this Buff-banded Rail turn up in our bird bath last week. They are rather secretive and the only significant water body nearby is our neighbour's dam. K-3+ FA*300 f4.5.

That's how I cracked mine 20+ years ago; I slipped in the bathtub at the hotel in Spokane WA where we enjoyed a Glen Miller weekend. I still get twinges.

We should start a cracked/bruised rib thread for mutual commiseration (and consideration of the photographic implications). You're sure it wasn't a Glenmorangie weekend?
