300mm plus Lens Club: discuss your long lenses

Taken on an overcast day in Swakopmund and looks like it has been taken in a studio with off white background. Significantly cropped. I will try it later with the 1.4 TC

I took advantage of the ...what would you call it, not indian summer, well anyway crazy Feb temps of ~20°C and did a trip to Hilbre Island (see pics here ). However notions of abundant maritime avian fauna were completely disappointed but I did see a bunch of ruff, and some brent geese. K3-ii, DFA 150-450.

Later at Burton Mere RSPB there was an obliging grebe and an egret, and I also saw avocet without being able to get any pics (too far away, right into the afternoon sun).

Some months ago I bought myself a Sigma 500mm f/4 sport in Nikon mount but still haven't got round to getting a body for it. Met up with some friends and one has a D500 so I took the lens along, never used a Nikon before and he wouldn't let me change any of the settings but I was suitably impressed enough to start looking for one now. Hand held, Jpeg, AV mode.

Red-throated loon (nonbreeding)
I was following this loon as it was working the shoreline, diving out of sight and popping up empty about 15 yards down shore each time. On its successful dive, it was actually visible in the transparent portion of a crashing wave as it violently chased it's prey before emerging with this meal.
