Tamron adaptall 300mm f2.8 compare - 360B and 60B

Don't think I'm on fire normhead ...hey where's that smoke coming from...

X-post with adaptall club.
I have got round to doing some comparison pics. This exercise provided one significant learning point straight away. I also did pics with and without the internal 43mm filter. Take the filter out and the focus shifts. The correction is about 5mm of focus rotation towards infinity. So now I know why when I acquired my 60B, without filter, it wouldn't focus to infinity, prompting me to spend some time trying to fix it. The 360B is similar. IQ-wise however it is difficult to discern any difference between images taken with and without the filter with either lens.
Pentax K3, tripod mounted, focus 10x live view, with loupe, remote shutter. Export from RAW LR3.6, just default settings.

Actually if anything the 60B looks slightly better, but its very close and I wouldn't be conclusive on just one test. I must admit I was hoping that the 360B would show a bit more to justify the purchase.

Some images taken with 5D Mark IV and 300mm f2.8L + 2x TC or with Tamron 150-600mm (some of them are at high ISO).

Great series!

I got the EF2.0x III converter today. No birding yet, but a test shot. Coming from the DA560 + 1.4TC, this was going to be an important one, because the Canon 400DOII + EF2.0x at 800mm f8 is going to take the place of DA560 + 1.4TC at 784mm f8. For wading and perched songbirds, it has been an important combination of focal length and aperture for me. A 2.0TC is not generally part of a serious birding kit, only for the special shots, but I took a gamble that it would turn out right with the Canon EF2.0x III, which is regarded (with Sony's 2.0TC) as the best 2.0TC around, and would be at least as good as the 1.4TC on the DA560.

Here is a test shot on the 7DII at 2000 iso. I am pleasantly surprised to see no CA, either lateral or longitudinal, whatsoever in testing with the 400DOII + EF2.0x III, which was a bit of a problem with the DA560 + 1.4TC (mostly longitudinal, so impossible to clean up), and feel that it passes the critical detail test. Also, auto focus is still fast, responsive and mostly spot-on.
On the Sony A7rII, sharpness is even better, but auto focus is clearly not native, with quite a bit of travelling through the focus range, needing to set the limiter on the lens, and aid with manual forcus. Once in the region, it snaps into spot-on focus immediately.
Finally, the very, very good IS in the 400DOII really comes to aid handholding 800mm, making it almost cheatingly easy compared to the DA560+1.4TC, and the 7DII seems to get better at iso 800 to iso 2000 compared to the K3II, whereas the K3II is clearly better at iso 100- iso 200, and a tie inbetween. What the 7DII does very well, is hold colors at higher iso settings, where the K3 washes out above iso 1600.

Looks good. I have a forum friend who shoots with the 400 DO combined with the Sony a9 and gets really excellent results, even with the 2x TC. If the light is there, that lens really delivers.

K-3 with the Sigma 500mm F/4.5. Color moire formed on the bird feathers but Topaz Denoise is good a cleaning it up with the clean color slider.

I reduce the sizes of my images typically by more than 50% before I post them on flickr. This one was full of details. I believe F/6.3 is where the Sigma 500mm F/4.5 is at its strongest with the K-3. Higher than that I think the combo starts to run into diffraction.
Fantastic IQ!

I took the K-1 and it's friend the Pentax 150-450 to the LA Zoo over the weekend. Here are a few of my favorites from the outing. I'm amazed at how sharp this lens is.

Currently I am trying the 400DOII + 2.0x extender out on my Sony A7rII. It turns out that focus is so critical at 800mm f8, that even though the 7DII produces very good results in many circumstances, it can also miss focus in certain types of light, eg. harsh overhead light , especially with added thermal distortion, or low contrast sideways light. It appears though, that the Sony A7rII nails precise focus in almost all circumstances with this combo, almost as if there is a bare lens on the camera. This turns the 2.0 extender from a reach for sharpness compromise that takes some extra care when handholding, into an almost casual walkaround option. In honesty, it is hard to believe how well the sigma mc-11 adapts canon lenses to a Sony e-mount body. Not native, but not that far from it, and the precision is fairy tale like.
So I can believe that a Sony A9 may be all you need for this Canon lens.

Here is a few with the 7DII. I am keeping it for the 400mm BIF shots, but these were testing with the 2.0 extender. But also for the extra reach (1.6x crop) and for the rugged K3 like build.

Sea Otters

This is possibly the sharpest action shot I've ever gotten with the K3 and 55-300PLM. These guys were pretty close to the pontoon boat I was on, so 190mm (285 FFE) was about right.
