I like the grackle. When the sun hits them just right they are really quite beautiful.
10 CM of rain tomorrow,, "la la la la la la live for today."

You have to track them for a while to get those shots.

I got a bit of a surprise today. I was shooting with the K-1 and Tamron 300 with Tamron 2x TC for 600mm ƒ5/6.

Eventually I started shooting with the K-3 and the Tamron 300 and 2x, just to check the image quality, I'm not sure with the 2x on the K-3 I've been getting some pretty spotty results.

Not terrible but also, I have better, shot with the Pentax 1.7x.

While I was testing the K-3 combo I put the K-1 on my lap, with the DA 55-300 PLM on it. (I didn't bring camera bag out.) I figured, frame loose, crop the corners.

Surprise. At 300mm, there was no need to crop. I did but I didn't have to.

One was taken at 230mm still no vignetting on the corners. This is the image un-cropped so you can see for yourselves.

When I get chance I'l have to check and see when the vignetting starts. So far it's good to 230mm.

I looked at that junco on your Flickr, and it looks to me like there was camera shake.

But yeah, I find the Pentax 1.7x is sharper than even a really good 2x TC. With all the coolness that is the AF capability of the 1.7x, I think sometimes people forget that it is actually very good optically for a 1.7x TC.

This is with the K-3 II + Tamron 300/2.8 (360B) + 1.7x AFA, cropped away 75% of the frame. Lens was @ f/5.6.

And this is the K-3 II + Tamron 300/2.8 (360B) + A 2x-S, cropped away about 2/3 of the frame. Lens was @ f/5.6

Fine pics once again luftluss. I 've looked hard at a number of the 1.7x's that have floated by on ebay but have so far been reluctant to bid the £160-180-odd that might win one. Might just have to bite the bullet...

One of the problems with that TC is it doesn't correctly tell the camera the correct focal length, so if you do move the camera, SR doesn't compensate. NO doubt some year, Pentax will come out with a 2x TC for us.

I own a 1.7x, and have since the 1980's when I bought an SF-1. It works surprisingly well on my M 400/5.6. The problem I have, of course, is that I am working with a 680mm f/9.5. The 680 demands shutter speeds and the 9.5 denies them unless I crank the ISO up.

That's interesting. I have the A 400/5.6 and I haven't been able to get successful AF when mated to the 1.7x. I'm envious of your success!

I had terrible success with that combo. I ended up using manual focus judging focus by my old film MF method. Focus until it's sharp, go back until it looks soft, go forward until it's sharp focus again, go forward until it's soft, estimate the middle of the two soft point, set and shoot. AF was a sure miss with that combo.

I think I forgot when I posted that your 300/2.8 + 2x TC combo is AF. Since my 300/2.8 is MF, I get to input the appropriate focal length for SR. It's a shame we aren't allowed to manually override the focal length for AF lenses.

I rarely even try the AF capabilities of the 1.7x with the M 400/5.6. My K-3 is set to use back button AF, so it doesn't even try. Having started using Pentax with an original first edition, AF is still an anomaly to me. The 1.7x AFA mates very well optically with the M 400.
