Busy background in this photo, but first time I've ever shot a red crossbill that wasn't in the top of a tree.

Who say 200mm is too long for portrait? Well, what about 400MM? I snuck into a photo shoot from a distance at the local botanical garden. Shot with a K-5iis + K 200/2.5 coupled to a K T6-2X converter.

muskrat or beaver? I couldn't see the tail.

He was hiding under the bridge/board walk along a park trail.

Looks like a beaver to me. A muskrat, besides being smaller, has a smaller nose relative to its face.

Nutria.

They aren't native to the Pacific Northwest, but were introduced somehow. They are an invasive species, and a wetland threat.

They also like to eat cedar tree saplings. One has killed many of the small cedar trees along the riverbank by my home.

There's a pretty cool documentary centered around them in Louisiana called "Rodents of Unusual Size". Little bastards.

Wow, that's not good. I had no idea the critters made it to the Pacific NW.

In a nutshell, brought to the area in the 1930's for fur farming. Escapees liked the area and multiplied (kind of like Californians)
Nutria, Invasive Species Council Priority Species

And since it's no fun posting without contributing a picture, here's a Washington state "rarity" from the Global Big Day, May 4th. We got 103 species that day!

Maybe a few newborns were carried on the backs of House Sparrows and Starlings.
