Went out again today to shoot some portraits of this magnificent bird: black swan.

ISO 1600, F5.6, 1/1000s, 600mm (a better quality version of the image can be found here https://ibb.co/tXJb3Jr )

Great use of hyperfocal DoF control to keep everything in focus from the tip of the beak to the behind the eye.

a few from the "old days".

In retrospect, the Pentax K3 was a very nice camera. A true classic, for the first time I could seriously crop
In a way, I regret that the K3 replacement came too late for me to have the patience and trust waiting for it. The DA560 was such a unique lens, especially for distant subjects, it was tremendous due to its much maligned telescope-like construction.

These were with the lens I had before the DA560, the Sigma 500/4.5

Got an DA* 300 from a fellow member and tried it out today.
The photos were taken with a K-1 with the HD 1.4x TC. Slightly cropped to take out the vignette.

Ruddy Turnstone. A beautiful bird.

Croppability K3+DA560

As I have a few days off from work, I've been reorganizing my bird images library, getting rid of a lot of delete candidates to make room for new sessions.
I switched to Canon a few months back, but revisiting the images taken through the years with my former set-up K3+DA560 (+ 1.4TC), I am amazed by how good the IQ of this combo actually really was. Not so much the (AF) performance, but the IQ, going back through all the images, was really very good i.m.o. Exceptional was the way the K3 worked together with the DA560 to capture really amazing detail over long distances., and the relatively low weight and high light transmittance enabled handholding without going into very high iso's (I never used a tripod in my life).
Here, for fun, is a full image with a 100% crop, only mildly sharpened, because often I see 100% crops posted to prove the sharpness of a lens, when in fact these 100% crops themselves have been processed with all sharpening methods available to make them look sharp. The K3 with the DA560 was truly sharp, with amazing detail and clarity, leaving room for additional sharpness to taste, not to let a cropped image appear sharp. Again, the K3 was something of a detail revolution for its time.

Chris

Unusual subject shot using Z7 and 500mm PF lens. 1st one is in FX mode and second one is DX mode. In DX mode, 24x16 image gets stretched to full EVF

Our annual spring trip to one of our favourite spots - the Carden Alvar a couple of hours' drive of Toronto. Unfortunately some of our favourites like Wilson's Snipe and Upland Sandpiper didn't come close enough, but each year has it's highlights.

Barn Swallow nesting in the blind we were sitting in - we didn't prevent it from zooming in and out:

One more step on the road to a decent shot of a Bobolink - I find them hard!

Prairie Smoke is part of the character of the place

Best from first batch of test shots with 150-450 & K-1: ISO 1600 at minimum focus distance, handheld, followed by crop. Hummer quite dark in original image. Processed with Silkypix 7 & Topaz Denoise 6.
