No lens can get rid of it. But since it is more noticeable with tele lenses, to get rid of it as a visual distraction, use a wide lens. But that is not how you wanted to frame

Thanks tim60. Yes. The wide angle would not have given me the shot I was looking for and the effect does not bother me in this shot. It did not make sense to me that any lens could get rid of atmospheric distortions, so maybe I misunderstood

Seems this is what some kingfishers do. This woodland kingfisher was bashing the earthworm as well until it stopped wriggling

Thanks. This is a difficult lens to use; in the 400-500mm range it is only somewhat acceptable stopped down to f/9 or so. But when you get the right mojo or whatever it is, the results can be gorgeous.
