DFA 150-450mm with 3rd party SD contact teleconverters

I recently acquired a tamron 1.4x tc and a kenko 1.5x tc. Turns out that these are the same tc, and the teleplus 1.7x tc I already have is almost identical, just slightly different optically giving slightly (~1.5x NOT 1.7x) higher mag. These tc's have been discussed in this thread (X-post).

I have now tested these 3 tc's on my DFA 150-450mm. First priority was to see if the SD contacts worked. All passed this test in these conditions (good sunlight, tripod mounted K3) - lens auto focussed easily, full data transmision. Then I tried a far subject and a near subject to get an impression of IQ. Lens alone was at 450mm, lens + tc lens was set at 320mm (1.4x) or 300mm (teleplus).
The more I try doing this the more I find that results are a bit arbitrary, subject to random factors eg atmospherics so results are not to be taken as anything definitive, just indicative. Red outlines show the crop exported from LR3, white the 1:1 pixelpeep crop.

FYI: Some long time back I posted some tests of long lenses with TC, including looking at the 150~450mm + DFA 1.4X @ 450mm. The results with that combination were very good, slightly more detail recorded than a deep crop of the 150~450mm @ 450mm without the 1.4X. I concluded that the combination was a reasonable way to get over 600mm with no detectable loss of IQ, in fact, possibly a slight gain compared to deeper cropping of an image taken @ 450mm.

I put my just acquired vintage 400mm f5.6 SMC-A to the test last evening. The sun drops down a power line right-of-way cut in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Shot handheld on a K-5iis.

Taken late in the day. With these long lenses I have had significant degradation of the picture due to atmospherics, but when it is cooler one can get shots like this impala ram looking regal
