Back at my favourite little watering hole today - a cooperative juvenile Green Heron.

So for that second shot, how many of you would have done a little post-production to remove that out-of-focus lily pad and reflection from behind the bird's bill? Maybe I should have just moved a foot to one side to avoid that!

Very nice! I like the green herons but don't see them often, sometimes a couple years go by between sightings.

That lily pad bothers me not a whit, and I wouldn't be skillful enough to remove it in PP anyway.

Thanks Luftluss! My wife mentioned it and now it's all I see when I open up the file!

I'm with luftfluss on this one. It's a great capture. In my opinion, pp is overdone in many cases. The pad is part of the environment, so don't let it both you. Furthermore, you know how women are, right?

Another fine capture Steven. The stealthiness of herons and egrets always helps.

I'm with Luftluss about the lily pad. It's a pleasant background and you got good light on the heron for good detail. If you want to unsee it, you could try using a mask to select the yellowish patch under the bill and desaturate it a bit, just to make the bill and cere stand out a little more. But really it doesn't matter.

Two with the FA*300 f4.5 and a little fill flash.

regarding the lilly pad

just a part of the bokeh to me

if I had noticed it at the time I might had tried an additional photo at a slightly different angle but as you realize, these " models " are not that comfortable following directions and might even get mad and fly off in a huff if you do issue directions or even change position for a different angle.

at least that has been my experience

Thanks for the input - I just thought that this one was near the boundary between "a bit of cleaning up" and something more radical, I'm interested in your responses, but I'm sure there are others who are keen to minimize distractions..

Agree with Des that provided you stay quiet and let them come close, it's much easier to photograph a heron than, say, a warbler.

I wouldn't change the look of the bird other than to try and re-create what I saw. Rarely I might lift the eye just a little if the face looks really blank - but I don't add catchlights. I learned my lesson once when I was about to erase a white spot in front of a Kingfisher's eye thinking it was a stray fish scale or something, then I checked the field guide and found it was supposed to be there!

Scan, so no EXIF nor memory of the lens used, but probably a Sigma 300mm f4 APO Macro.

Male and female white-headed woodpeckers from the weekend. K1 DA 560
It's been a treat to have them around this year as they're not always present.
They're regularly visiting a birdbath on our deck as well.
