Australian fig bird. Vario Elmar 100~400mm @ 400mm, hand-held, cropped (about 75% of the area of the original image removed). My evaluation of this lens: if you don't crop the IQ @ 400mm is very good but not outstanding, it will withstand some cropping but the shortfalls of the lens begin to show, considering the focal range it covers, and the fact that in effect you can hand-hold the equivalent of an 800mm lens on FF, it really is a winner for carry-about wildlife photography.

At PF sizes, it looks pretty good.

It is amateur hour here!
55-300PLM just arrived.
Yard birds don't wait for old codgers, so here are my first efforts. (in spite of the birds not hanging around).
House Sparrow @210mm cropped to about 10% of original
Magpie Lark @300mm cropped to 15% of original
Red-browed Finch @210mm cropped to 5% of the original !!!

Next time; wait with lens out to 300mm from the start. (5% doesn't do a pretty bird justice)

Hi Craig

Saves having a large nest when you look like a tree branch.

I don't know if this is a common bird/sight for you in Australia, but I find those pictures spectacular and rare! The Tawny Frogmouths are impressive and I always am amazed by their camo! All animals have adapted well to their environment, but these birds and their posture make them hard to distinguish from the tree branches...

The little one hasn't learned to become a branch yet. Cute.

They do okay in cities, too, you can see them occasionally up on power lines, just watching. Nocturnal, but they're not raptors, they're more like flycatchers/nighjars.
