The problem at Braeside is that there is probably 1000 rabbits per Tawny Frogmouth and the foxes help to keep the number down.
I bet the foxes keep the bandicoots, antechinus and lizards down too. If only they would dine exclusively on rabbits.

Braesides best 'crops' are Thistles, Rabbits, Common mynas and Starlings. All introduced.
One of the cruel ironies is that so many introduced things seem to thrive better than the indigenous species.

I have yet to visit that spot. They only open on the weekends though, right?
The Spit (otherwise known as Tommy Thompson Park) is open after 4.00 during the week but of course that won't give you much daylight. It's about 8km to the bridge and back - you could take your own or a bike share bike but the road can be very icy. It is a very good spot - there were over 200 Long tails there yesterday, lots of Scaup, Goldeneye and Bufflehead but lighting can be difficult. Just adding a shot from last year to whet your appetite! These days I'm closing down the aperture a bit to get more depth of field.

a bird I haven't seen in my yard before.
It did some pilates for me before it departed.
Any suggestions as to its identity? - my field guide doesn't help much.

White-browed Woodswallow (adult male)? I've never seen one - just going on the Australian Bird Guide (p.431) and Morcombe (p.308).

Excellent pics Rod.

55-300PLM !!!!!!!! @ 300mm, ISO 200, f7.1 1/400
Thanks Des,
I have Morcombe, but I was looking for a white cap not a white brow and more of a white tail than Morcombe shows. AND I obviously had what some would say was a "man's look".
I realised it was a white brow after I had posted the pic.

I was bending down to plug my power cord into a power pole (Trailer Park.... or caravan park for us down this way) when I heard and felt a swoosh... looked up and this fella was in my face. After a startled word or two... I thought I'd go and get my camera... but remembered I had my phone... so took a phone shot... from 400mm away.... so that makes it a phone 400mm shot.... so I guess it qualifies for posting here....touch screen for eye focus (sic)....

Kooky

The Kookaburra did later say if he was really trying to startle me he would have had a baby brown snake in it's beak.
