Thanks Steve. As @WPresto has said, apart from the Short-beaked Echidna found in Australia there are Long-beaked echidnas which are found only on the island of New Guinea - three species, all endangered. Fossils of two other long-beaked species have also been found, one in New South Wales and one in Western Australia.

The Short-beaked Echidnas are widespread and reasonably common in Australia (there are some regional variations and possibly sub-species). This one was at work beside the road. But you are never assured of seeing one on a bushwalk (well, not in Gippsland anyway), even in mild conditions. It's always a delight to see them, although they are likely to dig in to a defensive position as soon as they detect your presence so you don't often get a good look at their face.
