A bald eagle I captured while on my rickety pontoon at my lake property when I was chasing the loons around trying to get a good picture of them. I got 2 good ones of it in flight and a bunch of it having a feast of a northern that it caught. I heard that splash which is why I turned around. I tried for some pictures of the eagle in flight with the fish but wasn't ready so they were just blurry crap.

camera: k-3
lens: Sigma 300mm f/4 APO macro
ISO 400
1/400s
f/8

Still, a very nice story and now you know what to look out for. Stuff like that happens to me all the time. Walking through the fields just yesterday a snipe flew up just two meters to the side of me. Catching that would have been great...

When you hit everything right, results with the Vario-Elmar are very good (the posted image is cropped, removing about 50% of the original), but it's easy to forget you're working with the equivalent of 800mm on FF. Both vibration and very shallow DOF can subtly degrade IQ and make you think the lens isn't that great, when really it's the semi-competent photographer using it.

After a bit of searching I found that this species or color variant (unsure if it should have full species status) is confined to islands off the northeast Queensland coast and is regarded as the only bird endemic to the Great Barrier Reef.
