At first glance I thought the one in front was just a carved branch.

These blokes are the masters of disguise, they often pull in their feathers so they look thin and then shape their body to look like a broken branch.
I've been within about 3m of them and other people have come up and asked what I'm photographing, and they still can't see the bird after I try to point it out to them

Cheers,
Terry

I support this idea. I am still only dreaming of a 300 lens, but in the meantime I would enjoy viewing pictures such as the beautiful one above!

A good 300 can be found fairly cheap if one looks. The Sigma 300 f/4 APO Macro I use is a late film era one and I paid $130 for it which was basically stealing it. A 300/4 is generally a good lens and any late film one would likely work well as no one really bad a bad one so don't get one beat to hell and it will likely be a good lens. Just keep your eyes open for good deals and you will find them, especially if you have a local camera store that doens't get a lot of pentax business. They will often misprice things either way too high or way too low. If they over price something let it sit for 6 months and make them an offer. The local store near me had a K50 with a broken auto focus and failed aperture block that they were asking $180 for, it sat for 6 months, I offered $50 they declined and put it up on e-bay and ended up getting like $52 for it.

Thanks to those who commented on my three bad boys. It’s amazing what you can do, hunkered down in a large 4x4 and shooting through an open window. Maybe not the most intelligent thing I’ve ever done!

It really is a wonderful photo, I've come back to look at it a half dozen times!
