Well if I were to try to hand hold a shot with the 400/2.8 I would need one for extra stability.

Then I could post an image taken with it to one of the local photo groups and state that it was hand held with that monster of a lens and unlike a surprising amount that gets posted there I could say with a straight face that it was handheld (looking at you ultrawide angle shots that have a moon in them that is bigger than I get with my 400mm). I already make all the canon, nikon, and sony shooters jelous and had a few accuse me of being full of it when I posted a
single non equatorial mount shot of M42 that was lightly edited when they stated it was a fake. And then about a week later shocked them when I finally got around to
processing the stack and posted this others stated that I couldn't have gotten that with just 41 minutes in the metro area. If I get around to constructing such a thing I would have to get a picture of me holding and using it because it would be so absurd to see. I would probably get arrested if I went into Minneapolis or St. Paul with such a setup.
