I attempted to get some eagle shots but too many cars were stopping and the eagles flew off. Back at the cabin in the mountains the other birds flocked in so it was a good trip.

bummer but having others to shoot helps out!! nothing like a good trip! visited Guntersville dam today and saw 2 adults and one juvy but they were too far off to get anything

Wonderful shots and looks like a great combo.
Were you using AF for these shots? Or MF?

siva ss , once the AF 1.7 adaptor is mounted, always a.f. assist. The action is all around at the cabin so manual focus causes me to miss many bird shots. I do landscape with manual focus, very pleasant focusing feel on the 400.

Thank you. First time I have had the 400 out in freezing weather in a decade! The birds seemed happy to see me...

I am away from home at the moment. I will post a picture when I get back.

I bought the stock for around £20 on ebay , stripped out the shutter release mechanism and wired up a 2 stage switch using springs.

It works really well.

I've been thinking of doing something similar for my A 400/5.6, or maybe carving some sort of wooden stock.

Now I kind of want to construct such a thing to stick my A* 400/2.8 on so that I can "handhold" shots with it.

I would probably start with something like one of the composite thumb-hole rifle stocks and see about getting a proper good sling for it as that will help with the stability if one knows how to actually use a sling while shooting.

Sigma 50~500mm @ 500mm. Not the most outstanding long lens, but when everything hits properly the images are OK.
I chased one of those bustards for an hour or more many years ago (and no, I'm not swearing) - I couldn't get within 100 yards of it, it was so shy. They must have got tamer over the years!

I should go see if I can find an old rifle stock lying around - or make one. Having shot a fair bit, I do know how to use a sling, but that never occurred to me for with photography... hmm, might get cumbersome. Plans are coming along...

I'd be interested to see you 'handholding' the 400/2.8 with such a device...

Well if I were to try to hand hold a shot with the 400/2.8 I would need one for extra stability.

Then I could post an image taken with it to one of the local photo groups and state that it was hand held with that monster of a lens and unlike a surprising amount that gets posted there I could say with a straight face that it was handheld (looking at you ultrawide angle shots that have a moon in them that is bigger than I get with my 400mm). I already make all the canon, nikon, and sony shooters jelous and had a few accuse me of being full of it when I posted a single non equatorial mount shot of M42 that was lightly edited when they stated it was a fake. And then about a week later shocked them when I finally got around to processing the stack and posted this others stated that I couldn't have gotten that with just 41 minutes in the metro area. If I get around to constructing such a thing I would have to get a picture of me holding and using it because it would be so absurd to see. I would probably get arrested if I went into Minneapolis or St. Paul with such a setup.
