Actually, and seriously, if you were to carry that thing in Virginia and some fool sees it and says, "I felt fear", you could be convicted of the crime of "brandishing a firearm", the definition of which includes anything that some idiot thinks might look like a gun. No joke.

Good catches. I guess this is the time of year birds flock to your area.
Thanks. Sorry for the late reply, have been a bit slow on forums the last week-ish.

We have a good bird population year 'round here, but it does ramp up with some of migratory birds this time-frame. Hoping next year to be well-enough to try for some Sandhills and such at some spots fairly close.

I want one of these but I'm afraid of getting in trouble using it at the local nature preserves...

Now I kind of want to construct such a thing to stick my A* 400/2.8 on so that I can "handhold" shots with it.

I would probably start with something like one of the composite thumb-hole rifle stocks and see about getting a proper good sling for it as that will help with the stability if one knows how to actually use a sling while shooting.
Mossy, I do use a monopod every now and then with my 400, it is a handfull to say the least. Very nose heavy...kinda like having a 13 pound bowling ball on the end a stick! I also have a lens strap on it, just to be safer, but I never relax using a monopod...

Test shots with new lens Pentax-FA 645 400mm f 5.6

Here are a few test shots with the 645Z and newly acquired (used) Pentax-FA 645 400mm f 5.6. These shots are handheld. I am glad to see that hand-held is a possibility with this long lens though I will be using a tripod for birding. Unfortunately, I cannot do so yet because the lens arrived with an existing tripod fixture that does not match up with my tripod, and I lack the correct wrench for removal, must take care of that later today.
