I had a go at taking a few shots of the moon yesterday.

Pentax K-5/Pentax A*1200mm F8 ED [IF] + Pentax Rear Converter-A 1.4x-L giving me 2520mm

Daylight shots using a Pentax K-5/Sigma 800mm F5.6 APO EX

With that focal length you're in the realm where a mosquito flying past will generate wind causing the lens to vibrate as if there were an earthquake.

It's even worse when the mosquito beaks wind as it's flying past.

Now I want to go haul the MTO 1000 f/10 and 2x converter (so it mounts and focuses to infinity) so I can ring the bell at 3000mm full frame equivalent with it not being the full moon. I should be able to get what is illuminated all in the frame at once this time.

How many tripods do you use, or do you use some other mount? Roof rack on a braced truck bed?
See if you can get a photo of the flag on the surface so you can show it to all those moon landing sceptics.

Just one. The MTO 1000mm f/10 is actually shorter with it's hood on than the SMC A* 400/2.8 is with its hood retracted. However the tripod I use with those monsters is a monster it self. I built it this past summer for a bit under $50 out of some 2x4s and it is wider than it is tall and weighs in at about 60 lbs. I use an old new stock manfrotto 3047 head on it. The legs retract and fold up, and the center brace/tray comes out. The tripod easily has a safe load limit of 500 lbs but I haven't found a head that will hold that much. I am thinking of getting a gimbal head to stick on it or maybe seeing if I can just get an equatorial without tripod but I would need a pier extension so that the counter weight and shaft will clear the top of the tripod.

Well tonight isn't the night as it is cloudy here and I think that is substantally smaller than the diffraction limit of that setup even if there wasn't also a hundred or so miles of turbulent atmosphere between me and the moon.

1200mm times 1.4 is not 2520mm. What am I missing?

Thank you for the description, can you post a photo? - sounds like quite a build. I have access to an Australian built wooden Miller fluid head tripod for video cameras dating from the 1990s that sounds similar in strength and weight capability.

Ahhh, that would explain why no one has done it before. What about the other bits of junk left behind? Or the tyre treads from the lunar rover - or will they have all been obscured by now by surface impacts and resulting dust movement?
