Although we have a resident pair of Golden Whistlers, and the male is a superb and frequent songster, I have rarely got a good view of him, let alone a photo op. So when he was briefly visible in mediocre light, on two occasions, I just had to snap and hope for the best.

This one in 2015. K-30 + Sigma 400mm f5.6 tele macro

And this one in March 2020. KP + DA 55-300 PLM at 300mm

These were taken from a car in my garden with a K-5/Sigma 800mm F5.6 APO EX/RRS BH-55/Kirk window mount.

Lighthouse Keeper

Every time I see a lighthouse... I always think of this wee song passed down Father to young Sons. Started off by my Great Grandfather, who was the Captain on the Nore Lightship (Trinity House LV86), now moored and displayed at St Katharine Docks, London.

"I'm a Lighthouse Keeper and it gives me great delight,
To see that the Lighthouse light shines bright,
And for every night the light shines bright,
It was me that made the light shine bright"

Sorry... just a wee bit of child hood memories.

P.S. I've just located my Great Grandfathers picture from back in the day, so added it on to this post.

What comes to my mind every time a see a lighthouse is this famous ditty which I had to copy off line as it's been too long since I recited the whole of it, probably 40 years.

My father was the keeper of the Eddystone light
And he slept with a mermaid one fine night
Out of this union there came three
A porpoise and a porgy and the other was me!
Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for the life on the rolling sea!

One night, as I was a-trimming the glim
Singing a verse from the evening hymn
I head a voice cry out an "Ahoy!"
And there was my mother, sitting on a buoy.
Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for the life on the rolling sea!

"Oh, what has become of my children three?"
My mother then inquired of me.
One's on exhibit as a talking fish
The other was served in a chafing dish.
Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for the life on the rolling sea!

Then the phosphorus flashed in her seaweed hair.
I looked again, and my mother wasn't there
But her voice came angrily out of the night
"To Hell with the keeper of the Eddystone Light!"
Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for the life on the rolling sea!

If you've never seen an image of the Eddystone light, it's worth a GOOGLE image search. Surely one of the loneliest place on Earth to work.

Very good.

I can feel a lighthouse themed thread coming on...

P.S. Now done... Update not done... there was one already an existing thread, my apologies https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/26-mini-challenges-games-photo-stories/3...ghthouses.html

Yes, great to see you posting again Ken, stay well!
Amazing how the feet match the lichens on the tree trunk.

Finally tracked that lighthouse down to be Harwich High Light, then discovered all I had to do was click on the posted image to find out.

In your great grandpa's day, it is quite likely most did not live to an advanced age, but a guy my age, which is advancing, is wondering, how his knees held up. My wife is enamored with lighthouses.

I'm not actually sure he old he lived to, he was long gone before me... it's a real shame as I'd have so many questions to ask him.

I would think perhaps they'd be ok... well there's not too much walking about you can do on a static lightship.

Aye... they always strike me as a quite a romantic, solitary lifestyle for folk who manned them... a type of mystique that everyone is aware of.
