American Kestrel using my modified nest box
K3ii, DA 560
I set up nest boxes on my property a few years ago, covering the front of each box with bark and a hole drilled to overlap the entrance. My original hope was to attract a Western screech, Northern Pygmy, Northern saw-whet or, dream of all dreams, a Flammulated owl and grab some photos of their heads sticking out of the hole. Given the abundance of great-horned owls calling out in these particular woods, I think the smaller owls only pass through and stay away from setting up shop. Over the years, the boxes have been primarily occupied by flickers or mystery guests that I never appreciate entering or leaving (when I check them each winter they've always been used by something). This year an American kestrel pair have taken up residence.
