My Manfrotto 393 gimbal is great, but the U-shape made it hard to manually focus, so I treated myself to a Wimberley WH101 and a Gitzo Systematic 3. It's incredibly stable fully extended, and now I can shoot looking through the viewfinder instead of using live view+remote! I never thought I'd get this excited about a tripod!

I managed to test it out on a dreary day just before the deer all ran away

K3 ii and DA 560
Kestrel bringing home lunch.
A lot of noise coming from inside the nest box. Hopefully I'll be present when heads start to poke out.

Not only the first time seeing Virginia Rail at this location, but with chicks as well.

And another Bank Swallow shot - a few miles further along the lakeshore.

Very rarely do you see the rails out and about. Great catch!
They always have an angry look on them though .

Clicking on 'view exif data' in my browser pops up a lot of exif data which says 'Smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED'.

Well, a dull but busy morning outside my back door. I had Magpies (Australian), Magpie Larks, Grey Butcherbirds, Little Corellas, Galahs (rare visitors) and Lorikeets (including a first time youngster).

K3 had trouble focusing and I needed the pop-up flash. All shot standing in the doorway, no crops.

Craig we can supply any number of Galahs, if you want to see a few more.
But a warning; a flock of them can be VERY noisy in the morning. (...and the evening, and any other time that they choose).

And Cockatoos; do you want a few of them too?
There were at least 60 on the neighbour's front lawn this morning. But I have no photographic evidence of the occasion; (too busy at the time) so perhaps it didn't happen.

Thanks for the offer but two or three at a time is fine

There are probably over a hundred Little Corellas hanging out in the park over the road, so I'm trying hard not to encourage too many to visit. They also like the local Bunnings for some reason.

Galahs are not uncommon in the area, just uncommon in my backyard (and Braeside Park for some reason, but there are plenty of Cockatoos there).

Thanks Swip - they are certainly aggressive the way they go after the worms - often almost burying their heads in the mud to get them. And for a bird that usually spends its time deep in a reed bed, cautiously moving from one reed stem to another, they can be incredibly fast on their feet.

Here's another bank swallow shot.

I would appreciate comments on the number/percent of keepers those of you shooting with the DFA 150-450 on a KP achieve on average.

My images here are from a shoot at local lake yesterday. My goal was to get as many sharp images of these birds on the wing as I could with my FA*400. Attached are two ring-billed Gull shots from a little over 200 total. My percentage of keepers was about 25%. This was my first practice session. All significantly cropped.
