Don't you know that Pentax equipment doesn't work for action shots? I love the backlit effect.

Thats true but I said to the camera before taking the shot, 'just think of it as a landscape with dynamic elements' and it got over itself. Thank you for commenting..

Thank you. The images indeed came out better than I expected. This is a new experience for me, but I do believe you can make some credible images if you choose your time, place, and lighting carefully. The K-1 with all its controls and capabilities is a great platform for the effort.

The eastern bluebird is pretty spectacular but still somewhat rare. Active programs of nesting boxes and trails of nest boxes maintained by volunteers has helped them make a comeback in the last 40 years or so. They were pretty much pushed out of their normal nesting area by sparrows and starlings introduced from Europe in the early 20th century and their populations plummeted.


The western mountain bluebird is much more common. We usually see some when we visit Yellowstone.


I saw an eastern bluebird stop by my yard this year for a few minutes. The first one I have ever seen in the 35+ years we have lived here.

My grandfather, who was horse farming in the early 20th Century, said he noticed a decline in (Eastern) Bluebirds when they went from using white oak fence posts to other kinds. Perhaps the woodpeckers first made suitable nesting holes in those oak posts, which then the bluebirds and other hole-nesters could use. I've also read that back when orchard keepers didn't trim off any or many dead branches, bluebirds would nest in the ends of large broken dead apple branches in which the core had rotted out leaving a suitable cavity. We usually have a couple of bluebird pairs nesting around our pasture, they may be using wild cavities, since often we have wrens in our bluebird nest boxes.

I got up close to some cows today. I think these are English Longhorns. These things are really quite big, but they let me photo their calves. The adults were so un-bothered that I spent ten minutes crouching to get a particular photo of one but it didn't bring its head up once!





This cow is "Usefull". For what? Being cute!

I slowed the shutter right down to 1/250 at f/8 to get some raindrops in the background of this glamour shot. I could have pushed it a bit further.

Thanks...although it all should go to the camera-lens combo, all I managed to do was pan sufficiently well for it to do its job!
The Pentax AF system isn't all bad.
