Wow. Looks like the eagle was close

Congrats! That kind of opportunity doesn't happen every day and you nailed it!

The A 400/5.6 is a pretty sharp lens, so it can withstand quite a bit of cropping, although the aberrations are bothersome.

Thanks! I was getting frustrated focusing because over the last few months I'd been shooting mostly my Tamron Adaptalls, where the focus ring turns in the opposite direction of Pentax. I really felt like a fool, constantly messing up my focus

What Tom said about technique is obviously very important, but I would add that shooting RAW and applying a little PP always helps, in my experience. I don't mean crude use of sharpening; I am thinking mainly of exposure adjustments and adding clarity and microcontrast. Your Dark-eyed Junco shot is a good example: a nice sharp image as it is, but would benefit from a little adjustment.
Thank you both for your comments. I'm making some adjustments, like using a tripod, and shooting some raw files. Thanks for the tips.

Excellent capture! The framing and the tilt to the head just adds something special.
Best.
