I purchased a used SMC 1:4 300mm at the beginning of December, and after 6 weeks I feel I'm finally familiar enough with the lens to start getting good results.

Étourneau sansonnet / Common Starling [Sturnus vulgaris]
En plumage d'hiver / Winter plumage

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, 2021.01.22

Ils sont très jolis avec leur plumage d'hiver ! / They are so beautiful with their winter robe!

Pentax K-1 + SMC Pentax-FA* 250-600mm f5.6 ED [IF] @ 600mm

The final IQ was affected by the fact this shot was made inside the house, and thru 2 old wooden windows.

p.p.s. ho yeah, another disclaimer... light was not so good.

It is still a nice short.
Short comings or otherwise.

Nankeen Night Heron, K3 DA*300, Tamron-F 1.4 TC:

In around 400-500 visits to Braeside Park I had seen one of these perhaps 5 times and caught one on camera (lousy shots) perhaps 3 times, they seem to be very shy. On the second last day of 2020 as I was arriving at the park I met up with one of the other guys as he was leaving, he had a great big smile on his face as he told me he got a shot of a Night Heron in flight. In my wanderings I arrived at the place he got his shot and after ten minutes I realised that what I thought was yet another Darter chick sunning itself was in fact a Night Heron!

Anyway, turns out a pair are nesting nearby and I've gotten shots on six days so far this year! This is one from today:

A 'Two-birds short story' in 3 pics.

(1) 'ha, great, he's looking the other way. I'm gonna kick his butt'

(2) 'oops, he was only pretending!'

(3) "hey mate, what'cha doing?"
"Nothing mate, having a stretch, feelin stiff ya know".

For the SMC 300mm f4, patience, a steady hold, and good lighting pays off. Thanks to the K-1s CIF and high ISO performance for making old lenses perform very well in the digital age.

IT also produces some great results for non-bird photos

another from the same "in thru the windows" series.

It's at the shorter distances you see the strenghts of the SMC Pentax-FA* 250-600mm f5.6 ED [IF] lens (on Pentax K-1).
1/640s, ƒ/7.1 ISO 800

Close Encounter

I was closing the distance between myself and the intended subject when this beauty took off from dead ground. DA*300 and KP handheld.
