I have the 1.4X-L and actually wanted the 500/4.5 (screw mount) for years not really knowing what I would do with it. I haven't found a lot of things where I go I want a focal length above 500mm or so but less than 2000mm. The moon is one such object where getting to about 1000mm produces really good results as your image shows but then I think what else would I photograph and come up blank. If I went after planets I would want to be at over 2000mm. I now chase the bigger Messier objects and even then some of them at 400mm is a bit much (M45 looking at you and difficulty keeping you in the frame). The smaller ones again I would want something up around 2000mm

You might look into APO refractors designed for astronomy. The prices of some are not bad relative to the price of a new 1000mm camera lens. The focal length is not always given for such telescopes, but the diameter of the front element and the aperture usually are, so remember that FL = aperture X front element diameter. e.g. a telescope with a 100mm front element rated @ f5.6 has a focal length of 560mm.

I am familiar with such things and how scopes are specified so am familiar with the aperture and f number listings. I have looked at scopes as something to add to the collection of astro equipment but there are other things that are needed first to actually use them effectively like a big enough equatorial, an autoguider, and guide scope (these are things I am looking to get in the hopefully near future). Once you get past about the 400-600mm range scopes really start becoming the better option for astro shooting. However I still would have the problem of wanting to get above 2000mm and there you go get reflectors with coma correctors, field flatteners, and adapters so you can hang a camera off the back.

The problem now is that I can reach out to 560mm at f/4 (and I can run at f/4) and if I spring for the 2X-L converter I get to 800 at f/5.6 so that would get a lot of the Messier catalogue so I would likely be served better by going to a big aperture reflector (maybe a 10" or 12" to start since I am pretty close to a 6" already) instead of chasing other longer refractors. Astrophotography really can get expensive as the solution to your problems is very often throw gear (more money) at it.

I finally upgraded DxO to version 4, so I can benefit from the lens correction module for the DA 55-300 PLM. The blue tit is quite severely cropped, the goldfinch not.

For northern Germany we have a surprising amount of snow and very cold weather at the moment.
Some birds looking for food in my garden came quite close to my office window.

Common Wombat, Wilsons Promontory NP, Victoria. Wombats are marsupials and have backward-facing pouches. They are mostly nocturnal but are often seen out grazing in the afternoon. KP + DA 55-300 PLM at 300mm

How the devil did you take such great shots of these birds in flight?? These birds have been a favourite of mine since I first saw them in Papua New Guinea late 1960s, 1970s. When I returned to Australia early 1980s and chose Brisbane instead of Melbourne (where I came from) I was inordinately pleased to be woken up one spring morning by a familiar trilling noise, and there, sure enough, 40 or 50 rainbow bee-eaters all in a row on the powerline across the road from my bedroom!!

Sadly they have been absent the last two years or so. Their wings have this beautiful translucent bronze when they fly with the sun behind them.[COLOR=Silver]

Thanks and great that you like the bee-eater shots. Actually all the bee-eaters here are migrants. I like the rainbow bee-eaters too, hopefully I got the chance to capture it after the pendamic is over.

There are some that I would like to keep it, noticed that I don't have the drygonfly shot but I got the little bee shots.

Two images of a robin's nest from years ago. The EXIF data says 8mm, which means it was a lens without electric contacts making it the 400mm f4 Tamron.

Pentaxians, those are beautiful and amazing shots - how do you manage such excellent captures of these birds in flight.

I'm using the Sony rx10mk4 with wide focus area mode to perform the tracking of the bee-eaters. Pictures were taken under an overcast day so I set my ISO between 100-800 only with shutter speed at 2500. For the rx10mk4 under 600mm, aperture will auto set to F4 and I'm using S mode. The tracking features on this bridge camera is owesome, after coming from Bigma, DA300 f4 and the DFA150-450 on KS1, K70 and KP. I can conclude that Portability is my first priority.
