Very impressive. I struggle with the KP/300 mm combo to catch BIF. But I thought if I do get that Sony, I can't post here any more....

This is a (stationary) rosy-faced love bird. A near endemic parakeet

We've had this discussion before. I think that the consensus is that this thread is open to images taken with long telephoto lenses from any camera or system. I for one find it interesting to hear the experiences of forum members about other systems.

So you can go ahead and get that Sony (if you can accept the compromises of having a sensor about half the size of an APS-C sensor). @Pentaxians has certainly shown what it can do in skilled hands. (Animal eye AF sounds interesting.)

@kengoh - another beautiful bird series - so sharp and detailed, and perfect bokeh that isolate the birds so beautifully. Beautiful work - I could see a very attractive set of 10' x 12' wall art frames here!

Thanks Des. They are lovely birds, I will still feel like a traitor getting that Sony. My first digital camera was a Sony and it was great. But I agree with the sentiment that this is about long lenses and some cross pollination will be very useful

I agree with @Des; unless the thread is limited by its terms (stated in the title or the original post), there is no limitation, as I understand it. For example, if the title of the thread specifies the use of a particular Pentax lens, then no Sony allowed. But if it says something like this thread's title, pictures taken with any long lens >= 300mm will be welcome. E.g., see @Pentaxians' post a few ahead of yours.

I think if you go back through the thread, you will find discussions about this appearing every so often.

As far as I know, the thread is about discussions with 300+ teles and their use, issues technique etc, using the resulting photos as support for a discussion, or simply to say, “look what I can do with this combo”

Someone once commented on one of my posts that I shouldn’t have posted because my Sigma 70-200/2.8 plus 2x TC didn’t qualify because although the combo was more than 300 mm, the base lens wasn’t. Go Figure?

Since getting the 560/5.6 and matching it up with my K1 I have switched for BIF shots to the 9point central sensor grid, because keeping a moving subject in the dead center of the frame is almost impossible and I would miss many shots if I used center sensor only for AF.

Three great shots, Des. Love the close-up look and the detail on the Pied Currawong, especially.

I joined the long lens club this week with the arrival of my first * lens, the DA*300mm. Took it out for a first test today. It was -20C so there were no critters or birds to be found so just a few shots of the frozen world. These were taken with my K3 plus the Tamron PZ-AF 1.4x teleconverter and of course the DA*300.

Thanks very much Peter. The currawongs are very bold aren't they? But they frighten off the small birds.

Fantastic snap!

Is this background blur as it is by the lens (ie no pp on "smoothening" the blur)?

All of these are pretty uncommon birds here at this time of year.

The third time I have seen this Hermit Thrush, always in the same tangle of shrubs (with a noisy hockey game going on on a pond a few feet away). Some say this is a Swainson's Thrush but unless there's another thrush around this one has the reddish tail that points to a Hermit.

Juvenile Black - crowned Night - Heron. Most of the shallow water is frozen up now so it must be hard for this bird to find food.

Harlequin Duck (with Buffleheads). Saw this same species (maybe the same bird) in the same location last winter. It likely came from Newfoundland. A major crop - just ten percent of the original image area.
