So today we got brave, and took the 150-450mm off the tripod, and put it on our monopod, with the Vanguard G 300HT pistol grip head with cable release. Shot about 150 pics - kept about 13 !!! I can see we are going to have a long learning curve with this lens!!!

Here is a couple of the retained pics:

A good day, everyone!
I've dipped my toes into the DSLR world only recently, but birds have quickly become one of my favourite subjects, and I found myself longing for longer and faster lenses
Since I'm still a student, my budget is limited, and this is reflected in my gear - I'm using a K10D (proud member of the 10MP CCD club ), and mostly manual lenses so far.

Recently I got my hands on a Novoflex Noflexar 400mm F/5.6 and 600mm F/8 at an affordable price. I heard they were among the best affordable vintage telephotos, and the insane concept of a photosniper appealed to me though I'm still waiting for a Pentax adapter to arrive. A Pentacon 300mm F/4 also is in the mail, another suggestion I've come across.

To honour the club rules, here's a photo I've taken with a 300mm lens this morning:

Nothing to write home about, but I was still positively surprised - it was an Auto-Revuenon 300mm F/5.6, taken at F/8 if memory serves, which I got at an absolute bargain price last week. Cropped as much as I dared with 10MP to go by
It's my first time seeing this kind of bird around here, it also had a peculiar call. I suppose ornithological knowledge follows suit soon where one hunts after birds.

I've seen many spectacular images while browsing this thread, and hope to follow suit one day

Thanks again, I'm pretty lucky to live close enough by to take photos of these guys.

Thanks everybody for the kind comments.

Yesterday, another "new" bird in my garden - new in that, while I have seen the bird before in local nature reserves and parks, this was the first time I have seen it in my own back yard. At first I thought it was a slightly different (maybe juvenile) looking Willy Wagtail - there was one flitting about at exactly the same time so I thought "a pair?? or parent and juvenile". But when I took a closer look, no.

It is a Gray Fantail. It performed the aerial acrobatics of catching insects in mid-air like the Willy Wagtail, but unlike the Willy, who will sometimes perch and look around for a while, this little blighter rarely perched for more than a second or two!

Pentax D FA HD 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 ED DC AW; 1/800s; F6.3; ISO 400. Very low, late afternoon sun. Tripod with Vanguard GT 300H Pistol Grip Ball Head.
